BUDGET CALCULATOR

The tool below can be used to help create your budget like the wealthy do. The recommended percentages are based off after tax income. I recommend using this tool to determine your spending by category. Remember every budget is different; if you don't own a car, your transportation costs might be lower. Once you have your spending by category identified, use Mint.com to keep track. Review at least one year, monthly is better.

Definitions:

Housing - Includes rent/mortgage payments, property tax, condo fees and savings for maintenance/repair.

Utilities - Includes heat, hot water, electricity, cable/satellite, home phone, cell phone, and internet.

Transportation - Includes car payments, car maintenance, fuel, and public transportation. I would recommend including a car replacement fund that starts as soon as you buy your new car.

Insurance - Includes home owners insurance, renter's insurance, car insurance, life insurance or any other insurance that is not related to medical - there is a separate category for that.

Food - Includes anything you eat.

Savings - Includes your retirement accounts and emergency fund.

Debts - Includes credit card debt, student loans, auto loans and any other money you have borrowed with the exception of mortgages. Those are in the housing category.

Medical/Health - Includes health insurance and any monthly prescriptions you may have. I would lump gym memberships into this category.

Personal - Think of this as your disposable income. Anything that doesn't fit the other categories goes here. It  will primarily be made up of things you wanted vs. things you needed.

Recreation - Includes vacations, concerts, road trips, nights at the bar or any other activity that you do for fun.

Clothing - Includes everything from sandals to winter jackets.
